In this tour we visit the nearby mountains of Sierra Juarez; a very rich area in biodiversity, Indian cultures, Indian villages and stunning landscapes. The road is quite winding and goes up and down until we reach Gelatao, a small but very important village because it is the birthplace of Benito Juarez, the Zapotec Indian who became President of Mexico and is considered the founder of modern Mexico. Then we will visit Yahuiche, a small but very cozy village which shows us what a mountain, off the beaten path community is. There we will have a short hike and enjoy a stunning landscape for about 2 h.

The tour continues to Capulalpan, with a beautiful setting and sone of the Magic Villages of Mexico. Here we visit the XVI century church with its unique wooden roof and beautifully carved Reredos ans stroll around to enjoy the peace and beauty of the place. We will have lunch there at a community Trout nursery.

Our next stop will then be Ixtlán, the head small city of the area with its extraordinary XVII century church, hosting many LUXURIOUS baroque style gilded altars.

Then we’ll drive back to Oaxaca City.

“Juan This is the second tour we have taken with Juan and we enjoyed it as much as the first. This time we toured some mountain villages and took a walk in the hills. This tour gave us a very different view of the Oaxaca area, compared to archaeology areas we visited the first time. I have learned to save up culture and historic questions to ask Juan as we drive along. We are learning a lot and that's why we travel. We plan to take more tours with him in the future. “Juan is an amazing guide. He is extremely knowledgable, friendly and observant. He is keenly aware of what travelers are interested in and what best suits their needs. We spent three full days with Juan and were so grateful for his insights and knowledge about Mexican history and culture. You cannot tire Juan out. He seems to have boundless energy. Juan took us on two strenuous hikes and he clambered up steep slopes like a 20-year-old. He is also a skilled driver, which is valuable in Oaxacan traffic.”

“Juan was a most pleasant and knowledgeable companion on this trip as well as being a careful and resourceful driver! I enjoyed his company and learned a lot from things he told me about the area. He was very patient with my Spanish as well, though he is completely fluent in English. I highly recommend this trip, and Juan, for the beautiful scenery, the interesting small towns, and the peace and quiet of the areas visited in comparison to the city.”
