Mitla, Teotitlán Tour

This tour combines the visit of the two most important archaeological sites in the Valley of Oaxaca and also visits other interesting places in route like, “the weaver place” and “the giant tree.”

About This Tour

This tour includes three of the most interesting and important sightseeing around Oaxaca.

We start with a nature wonder, the extraordinary giant tree of Santa María el Tule which has the largest trunk in the world is more than 2000 years old, to some extent, continues to be a Sacred tree for the community, and it is just superb.

Mitla is located at the end of the eastern valley and boasts magnificent and very sophisticated, stone laced decorated Palaces. This site was still occupied by the time of the arrival of the Spaniards and the palaces were the living quarters of the Highest Priest. No cement, and no mortar was used to hold the stones together and they are still here in very good condition after more than 800 years.

In Mitla you will also find a big textiles market nearby the ruins where you can purchase typical dresses, bedspreads, tablecloths, blouses and other items.

The last place to visit will be the famous and best reputed handicraft village of Teotitlán del Valle where wool rugs are woven using sheep wool and other fibers and using plants to dye the fibers, just as in the old days. Designs are ancient and modern.

It is a full day tour but one that synthesizes very well what Oaxaca is and offers.
