About This Tour
We leave the city and head up to the northwest of the State of Oaxaca, following the toll road, crossing mountains and finally reaching the Valley of Yanhuitlán in about two hours where two significant buildings are located: Tiltepec and Yanhuitlán churches.
Tiltepec is a quite isolated community that boast an incredibly beautiful small church finely decorated with stones carved in the Indian baroque style that has been called “tequitqui” baroque. This is what has been considered an Indian interpretation of the Spanish baroque following Indian architectonical norms and ideas.
We then continue to Yanhuitlán to admire the superb construction of Convent and Church, from which it has been said: it might be the most elegant construction of the whole occidental hemisphere during the XVI century. This might be the best expression of the PLATERESQUE architectural style in Mexico.
In the same village, it is worth too to visit the Studio of ceramist, sculptor and painter Manuel Reyes, who together with his wife Marisela are two well-known artist producing incredibly beautiful pieces of art.
Leaving Yanhuitlán we will cross part of the GEO-PARK MIXTECA ALTA, a geological park recently established by UNESCO in the area. So to say, the most complex geological area of Mexico.
The next place to visit will be Teposcolula where we will appreciate the biggest and most impressive open chapel ever built in Mexico, in renaissance style. We will also enjoy the village itself, cataloged as one “Pueblo Mágico” a title given by the government to places that have a special and significant characteristic to be classified as such.
Then we’ll drive back to Oaxaca city.
